Road and track video and map – Horseheads to Ithaca, NY via Watkins Glen.
The weather forecast for today was rain and it had rained heavily overnight so I did not go for my planned morning walk but slept in and had a late breakfast. This was because my first activity was “Drive The Glen” at 12PM at Watkins Glen International race track where the US Formula 1 Grand Prix was held from 1961 until 1980. This is simply driving your own car for three laps around the race track following a pace vehicle but I have never driven a Formula 1 track before and thought it would be fun. The only way to see this is on the road and track video linked above.
I then drove on to Ithaca which is on one of the “Finger lakes” that give this region its name. However, given the dull weather, I visited two trails that lead to waterfalls rather than the lake.
Ithaca Falls is right in the heart of the city and is a single 105 feet (32m) fall.
Cascadilla Gorge trail is also in the city and follows Cascadilla Creek as it descends 400 feet (122 m) over 8 waterfalls ranging in height from 8 to 80 feet (2.4 to 24 m).
This is the highest of the Cascadilla falls at the top of the trail.
Being able to walk these trails in the dry was a bonus I did not expect.
Beautiful, and a restful scene to enjoy.
There were benches along the Cascadilla Gorge trail that I took advantage of to relax. The falling water was very restful.
Please send some of the rain to CA. 😉 Love, Kusum
I wish it was in my power to do so.
Beautiful landforms and thanks for the background.
I’m sure you know that these falls are due to the glacial action that created the finger lakes. There are so many of them around and they are relaxing to be near.
