Using the map/video page.

I wanted to fully document the road trips that I make in retirement and many posts will have a link to a map/video page. These pages are quite data heavy and, although they should work on a phone,  you should consider data usage. They look far better and are easier to use on a bigger screen anyway.

The video is mainly a time lapse of the journey and the map follows the journey as the video is played. As you move around in the video the red marker on the map shows the current location. The local time (based on the location at the start of the day) the distance into that day’s journey and the elevation are shown at the top.

The map shows the route in various colors depending on how much the speed of the video was increased. Red represents a huge speed-up and the colors graduate to green which indicates real-time. Clicking on the route will move the red marker and video playback to that location. You can zoom in on the map for greater detail and you can keep the red marker centered by checking the box at the top left of the page.

Audio annotations, embedded photographs and points of interest are identified with clickable markers on the map. Tip: the route overlays the marker icons so you may need to zoom in to hit the marker instead of the route.

You can, of course, switch to satellite view or stop the video and use street view to investigate a location in detail. Since video seeking on YouTube is limited to about one second precision you may find that street view at the red marker is a little displaced from the location you see in the video.
