Sadly, today was our last day in San Francisco but we had a great day trip to Sausalito on the ferry. This gave us the opportunity to spend time at the extensive market in the ferry building in downtown San Francisco before boarding the ferry for the half hour journey north to Sausalito.
Before the Golden Gate Bridge was built Sausalito was a railway and highway terminus for passenger and vehicle ferries to San Francisco from the north and, in the second world war, was a significant shipbuilding area but is is now known as a picturesque home for the wealthy and a tourist destination.
View of San Francisco from Sausalito.
We spent a while exploring the hillside homes and locally owned small stores of the town before having lunch sitting on the dock of the bay (the song was written by Otis Redding here). By then the sun had come out and our ferry ride back to San Francisco was very scenic.
Our ferry with Angel Island in the background just before leaving Sausalito.
The ferry crossing provided great views of several of the areas iconic landmarks.
Alcatraz Island, home of the infamous prison that was closed in 1963.
The Transamerica Tower seen from the bay as we approached the ferry building in San Francisco.
Coit Tower tops Telegraph Hill. It was completed in 1933 after the city received a bequest “for the purpose of adding to the beauty of the city I have always loved.” from a wealthy resident, Lillie Hitchcock Coit.
After returning to San Francisco we visited a hill called Mount Olympus, considered the geographical center of the city, offering this incredible view.
This evening we will just hang out with Kusum and Uday before Rita and Christian head to the airport tomorrow morning and I begin driving home.
Gosh, I did not know SF was so beautiful. 😉
“Your” San Francisco certainly is. Thank you.
It was our immense pleasure!
