Road video and map – Byron Bay to Sydney Airport, NSW

My last full day in Australia was spent driving. I wanted to avoid the afternoon rush hour in Sydney as I headed to my airport hotel so I made an early start on the 722 km/480 mi drive and did not make any tourist stops. I fly home tomorrow morning and, due to the magic of the International Date Line, I should arrive in San Francisco three hours before I leave Sydney.

I really wish that I had had another three or four days here so that there were fewer long drives at the end but I came on a mileage ticket and had to take the dates available. I can certainly see why most people fly around the country but I really enjoyed (almost all) the driving and saw all the major sights I have wanted to visit as well as many others I never knew about previously. With only one disappointment and fabulous weather all the way it was a very enjoyable trip that really lived up to expectations.

Thank you to all who read and/or commented. I have yet to decide where my next road trip will be.

Just to finish up I thought I would include a few statistics – mainly for my own interest when I read it later.

Total distance driven (according to the car): 6,146 miles (9,891 km)
Average fuel consumption: 29.1 mpg (US)
34.9 mpg (UK)
Lowest elevation: 7 feet (in Geelong, VIC)
Highest elevation: 3,459 feet (in Blue Mountains NP, NSW)
Miles of raw video captured: 5,920
Duration of raw video captured: 106h 36m 41s
Average speed during video capture: 56 mph
If you watched all the road videos you have spent 4h 40m 55s traveling with me.

  1. Once again I’ve enjoyed being one of your armchair travelers. I’ve always wanted to visit Australia – but never have – so this trip was especially fun. I’m glad to hear that you’re already thinking about your next trip!

  2. Always good to read along and see your outstanding photos. I’m sorry it’s over.. till the next one!

    1. Thanks, got home yesterday to find your postcard from Dawson City. Took its time arriving as I left Aug 18 and it was postmarked Aug 9. Sounds like a great drive.
