Road video and map – Gladstone to North Brisbane, QLD
Another drive south today with the only tourist stop being at the Australia Zoo. This was founded as a reptile park by Bob and Lyn Irwin, parents of the “Crocodile Hunter”, Steve Irwin. Steve invested much of the profits from his TV shows into the zoo and it now occupies over 1,000 acres. The zoo includes the world’s largest animal hospital and dedicates many of its resources to conservation.
The journey was somewhat slow and frustrating and I only spent a couple of hours here as I mainly visited to see the unusual Australian species that I did not see in the wild – although I’m glad about that in some cases.
The Cassowary is a large flightless bird that is often called the world’s most dangerous as they are capable of killing an adult if provoked.
One of the wombats having a late lunch.
The Tasmanian Devil is about the size of an average dog and is the largest carnivorous marsupial.
The signs all around the place sound like the Crocodile Hunter. This is the description for the Inland Taipan also known as the Fierce SnakeYou can watch Steve Irwin handle one on this YouTube Video or you can watch my tame video of two of them below.
Hi Steve,
Snakes look scary. I guess it’s true that every animal in Australia can kill you!
The Tasmanian Devil looks cute..
Loved your reef experience.
Safe travels
Cathy
There are a lot of scary animals here but I wonder why the snakes have to be that venomous. Nature is usually quite efficient, rather than going for overkill.
Thanks for the good wishes – as long as a venomous spider does not get into my motel room I think I’ll be OK.
Good luck with the spiders!
Thanks, I have been stuffing my socks into the opening of mt shoes at night -:)
Steve,
I love the wombat!
Also, I agree with Cathy. I really enjoyed the reef experience.
Nancy
Thanks, glad to have you following along.
