Heading West Across the Plains

I have started making the journey across the plains. Unlike the original perimeter trip, I do not expect any 500 mile driving days and have time to stop along the way to see sights that I have driven past on previous trips. Today, therefore, was a 300 mile dash along I90 from Rochester, Minnesota to Mitchell, South Dakota.

The map and video are here.

Yesterday’s weather had continued overnight and I was told that some spots near Minneapolis had received 10 inches of rain in 24 hours. It was still raining a little as I left Rochester but the weather improved as the day went on. On the way I decided to stop at Sioux Falls’ number one attraction, Falls Park, to take a short break and a few photos. As one online reviewer said “it isn’t Niagara but it’s very pleasant”.sioux-falls-1

My second photo-op was the number one attraction at my destination which is the World’s Only Corn Palace. This is an event space and theater where the outside of most of the building is decorated each year with corn murals. The effect is pretty impressive and, this year was dedicated to images of singers. The photos show what I mean much better than I could describe it.corn-palace
