Although I promised myself that I would get to the perimeter promptly I have not visited Atlanta in twenty years so, while in the area, I decided to spend a couple of nights here to visit some sights I’ve not seen.
To be honest, there doesn’t seem to be a lot that’s new except for Olympic Park and Turner Field (but the Braves are away) so I took my time driving down today along the scenic route. This involved a second crossing of Great Smoky Mountains NP and then driving the scenic Smoky Mountains Expressway. The scenery did not disappoint but, as expected, did not live up to the past four days.
The map and video are here.
The only stop I made was at Newfound Gap (actually discovered in 1872) in the NP on the Tennessee-North Carolina border. There is a good view of the mountains and road looking west but, when I climbed what appeared to be an elaborate platform looking east the view was pathetic. I just read that this is because it isn’t an overlook but the Rockefeller Memorial on the site where President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the National Park. The western view is shown below.
