Just Driving West across Texas

Map and road video of drive

I knew I was going to have a day of pure driving to get out of Texas and today was it. The area I was crossing is sparsely populated and there are few attractions. I was passing through Van Horn, the launch site for Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin, so I (optimistically) checked the launch schedule but the next one is March 29. I was planning a brief stop at Historic Fort Stockton but it was closed and the parking area was blocked so I couldn’t even do the short trail there.

Even though the journey was 433 miles on Interstate highway it was the most enjoyable drive of the trip so far because there was little traffic, a speed limit of 80 mph (129 km/h) and the surroundings were natural with plenty of hills and gentle bends to keep me engaged.

It felt like western driving and I look forward to more.

  1. You don’t get roads like that in Westward Ho! It is a small costal town in Devon, England with the oldest golf course in England and winding narrow roads. 40mph is good.

Steve, I enjoy waking up to your daily reports. Thanks for all the information.

    1. Hi Simon, I had never heard of Westward Ho before. 80 mph in coastal Devon will not work. Thanks for following my trip.

  2. Driving 80 miles an hour! Wow that must have been exhilarating. Steve, I don’t know whether I will ever go to Texas, but I feel I am getting to know the state a lot more through your blogs. Looking forward to meeting you this Saturday!!Very excited already!!
