I got home on Sunday (September 10) but had a couple of urgent issues to deal with that delayed this post on the final two days and summarizing the trip.
There’s not a lot to report on the last two days. On Saturday I drove from Smyrna, TN to Roanoke, VA and then drove home on Sunday. I did not do any sightseeing .
Map/video for Saturday is here.
Map/video for Sunday is here.
I did, however, see the impact of incoming hurricane Irma which was due to make landfall in Florida on Sunday. About half the people at breakfast in my hotel in Smyrna (near Nashville) were evacuees from Florida and the hotel was full. Some had left Florida on Wednesday and, of course, none knew when they would be able to return. The same was true in Roanoke. As I was checking out a guy came in who said he had been driving all night but the person on reception told him that she thought that all the local hotels were full. On both days I saw convoys of power line trucks heading south to staging areas where they could help out once the storm had passed.
Trip Summary
The actual vacation/sightseeing part of the trip could not have gone any better. The weather was great for the most part, the car ran faultlessly and there were practically no glitches in planning. I saw many fantastic places and had several wonderful experiences. I will admit that, by the end, I was happy to get home so that I don’t have to repack and move every day, figure out if there was a good pub within walking distance for dinner, or put up with hotel Internet.
The adventure part did not fare as well. I still don’t have the video from the drag racing, the “bobsled” ride was a horrible joke and I have yet to do my bungee jump in Marble Canyon.

WELCOME HOME STEVE!
Thank you. I’ll get in touch soon.
What wonderful memories you now have! Most importantly, you are back, safe and sound.
Love,
Kusum
Thanks, it will take a while to go through all the photos and put together a digital album of the trip to keep the memories fresh but I’ll have plenty of that as shorter days draw in.
Congratulations on completion of the Great American Journey .. or at least another one! Glad back safe and sound. Hope you will not be too restless in the coming days.
Thanks. Enjoying the down time at the moment.
Welcome Home Steve! I have watched all the videos but just about all of them at double speed, so more like 4.5 hours at 2800 mph!
Thanks. I thought some videos were challenging to watch at the speed I encoded them; double speed must have been crazy but thanks for following the journey. I’ll get in touch soon.
