As often happens when you start a project, I found that updating my software took three days, not two. Of course, some of the extra time was spent watching the wild-card baseball games or playing video poker but most was refining and testing the changes I had made before attempting to document a day’s driving.
From Sparks to Carson City, Nevada (the state capital) is only 32 miles but, today, I took the scenic route around Lake Tahoe which increased that to 138 miles. The weather has improved noticeably but it was quite hazy this morning so I took my time getting on the road hoping that it would burn off which it finally did – around one o’clock.
Google Maps shows the loop around Lake Tahoe is very close to the lake shore for much of the way but I was disappointed by the lack of good views as trees seem to grow right at the shoreline and block the view in most places. Nevertheless, it was a very pleasant drive through mountains, forests and small communities despite several delays due to road work. Finding places to park at the points where the lake was in sight was also a challenge. There is no parking along most of the loop and, where there are pull-offs or scenic viewpoints, the demand overwhelms the number of spaces available. I think you need local knowledge to find the best spots but, when you do get a view,, it is very rewarding and I managed to get some photos that will be pleasant reminders of the day..
I deliberately made sure I got to my hotel in Carson City early in case I had problems with my software updates but, I am pleased to say, they worked well and saved me at least 30 minutes editing time. The map and video are here.
All the photos are of Lake Tahoe – this one shows the trees lining the lake and the clarity of the water. This is Emerald Bay which is often used as the quintessential image of Tahoe.
The remaining two are just images I like.
Beautiful! Just beautiful!
Thank you.
